Photovoltaics integrated into the building

In-roof and on-roof solutions for maximum energy efficiency

In addition to the proven on-roof photovoltaic systems for power generation and self-supply, in-roof photovoltaic systems are increasingly gaining importance. In these innovative systems, the PV module completely replaces the traditional roofing, offering an integrated, functional, and aesthetically pleasing solution.
The HÖRMANN in-roof system is optionally available with opaque standard solar modules or as a transparent solar roof. In this way, we combine modern building design with efficient solar power utilization – ideal for companies that rely on future-proof and high-quality photovoltaics.

Transparent in-roof without sub-roof

Modules of a conventional photovoltaic system often disrupt the visual harmony of traditional pitched roofs. A photovoltaic roof can counter this criticism. The modules integrated into the roof surface not only produce solar power, but they also preserve the roof's aesthetics. Additionally, they fulfill the protective function of the roofing they replace. This is an intelligent roof solution that is highly functional and architecturally appealing. The semi-transparent roofing system allows for sophisticated solutions without the usual roofing, e.g., for carports, bicycle parking spaces, or hall buildings. By seamlessly integrating the modules into the roof surface or using the modules as the roof skin, a visually sophisticated solar power system can be realized.

Photovoltaic system as in-roof system by HÖRMANN

In-roof system on sub-roof

In this in-roof system, conventional roofing is replaced by a photovoltaic system mounted directly on roof decking or a solid wood ceiling. This saves materials and resources without compromising on an appealing appearance. Weather protection is also provided as with a conventional roof. In addition to a variant with controlled longitudinal and transverse drainage between the solar modules, a system is possible where the module frames overlap like tiles.

Advantages:

  • Power: Solar power or the capacity becomes visible
  • Aesthetics: Architecturally appealing
  • Versatile applications

Transparent facade solutions/Facade solutions on wall

Solar systems are also very suitable for facade use. As facades, transparent photovoltaic modules are a chic, contemporary material with energetic added value. Such a photovoltaic front gives a building or a hall a special look and additionally supplies power.
Specifically for the commercial sector, we develop representative facade solutions: Transparent solar modules ensure pleasant light entry in the interior, attractive appearance from the outside, and produce solar power on the side. Custom solutions from HÖRMANN are also available for barrel roofs, which are rounded across the entire roof surface. Special mounting frames from our own production allow optimal use of the roof area for almost any roof shape.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What should be considered for roof drainage of an in-roof photovoltaic roof?

For roof drainage, specially developed rail systems are used in the HÖRMANN in-roof system. This allows rainwater to run off to the eaves and then be connected to existing drainage pipes via gutters and downspouts or to percolate freely on site.

What are the different variants of an in-roof system?
  • PV on roof decking: The PV modules take over the function of the roof skin. The substructure is roughly equivalent to that of a tiled roof. By omitting conventional roofing, resources are conserved. For this purpose, special PV modules are typically used.
  • Semi-transparent PV modules as roof skin: The PV modules are visible from below. This system is suitable for all uninsulated buildings (e.g., PV canopies) and offers the advantage of light permeability. Thus, natural light incidence on underlying surfaces is retained.
