Open stable
What is important in open stables?
An open stable is generally understood as a stable building with a paddock or pasture, which horses can enter and leave at will. In modern horse keeping, open stables as group housing concepts are indispensable due to the horse-friendly husbandry conditions and are increasingly in demand. In addition to labor economic optimization, the social contact and self-determined movement of horses are particularly emphasized in open stable keeping. Keeping horses in an open stable enables the herd animal horse to live a species-appropriate life.
Our horse experts support you in the conception of your group housing, whether it's a run-in stable, open stable, or active stable. We plan the need for feeding places, lying areas, and paddocks according to your planned group size.
- Species-appropriate husbandry conditions
- Efficient feeding/manure removal technology
- Adequate space in relation to the planned group size
- Solutions for integration/health boxes
- Avoidance of injury potentials
Build an open stable with HÖRMANN - from consultation to implementation in good hands
The implementation of a group housing concept for horses mainly focuses on species- and behavior-appropriate husbandry. To ensure that horses and ponies feel comfortable in their future home, some parameters must be considered when planning open stables. Our horse experts are happy to support you with their comprehensive knowledge. In addition to the welfare of the horses, we also consider the technical and economic processes when planning your open stable. Benefit from the extensive experience of HÖRMANN in stable construction and equipment when building your open stable. We know what matters in run-in stables, open stables, and active stables. Additionally, we coordinate with your advisor from HIT-Aktivstall® or Schauer if needed.
Good to know — Building application and approval of the open stable or active stable
After intensive consultation, our architects are happy to create the building application for you and initiate the approval process for your open stable construction. Of course, your own architect can also carry out the planning for the construction of your open stable. If necessary, we are happy to assist him.
In addition to the obvious material and assembly costs for the building, there are other services and trades that need to be considered. Naturally, these differ depending on the construction project and its complexity.
Possible cost items can be:
- Concept creation/planning
- Creation of building application documents
- Surveying/soil investigation
- Implementation planning
- Structural analysis
- Fire protection report
- Earthworks
- Grounding systems
- Interior construction: electrical installation, lighting, heating/sanitary
- Stable equipment
- Indoor riding arena floor
- Irrigation system
- Exterior facilities
- Etc.
Feel free to consult with us about the costing points that need to be considered when constructing a riding facility.
The size of the box depends on the size of the horse. As a minimum, the guidelines for evaluating horse keeping in terms of animal welfare state the formula (2xWh)². For a withers height of 1.70 m, this results in a box size of at least 11.56 m². However, when planning, space for hayracks should be considered, as these may need to be deducted depending on the model. We are happy to advise you on a case-by-case basis.
Yes, a horse stable or an indoor riding arena is always subject to approval! First, it must be clarified whether it is being built indoors or outdoors. Depending on this, further requirements arise that dictate whether a building can be approved. For a planned construction project, it is therefore advisable to contact local authorities early. We are happy to support you with the approval processes for your building.
In the indoor riding arena, two factors play a crucial role: Firstly, the incidence of daylight, which creates a bright, friendly atmosphere. Secondly, air quality. Through optimal supply and exhaust air, the air can circulate and be exchanged. This is particularly necessary due to the regular watering of the riding surface. An insulated roof rounds off the whole and buffers external temperature extremes so that riding can be done in the indoor riding arena throughout the year.
The equipment of the riding facility with a photovoltaic system leads to energy-efficient management of the entire horse operation or can financially support the operation with full feed-in.
However, it is important to clarify the feasibility at the given location in advance. This mainly involves the connection to the power grid and the presence of a nearby transformer. If feasibility is generally possible, the PV load must be included in the building's static calculation – this is already included in our offer.
Building with wood is climate-friendly! Why?
Because 1 m³ of wood binds about 1 t CO2 during its growth. At HÖRMANN, we primarily use domestic woods to keep transport routes as short as possible and thus contribute to climate protection. In addition, the building material wood creates a bright, friendly atmosphere, making both horse and human feel comfortable. Furthermore, wood can be optimally combined architecturally with other building materials.
